A message from Miss Hand...

Hi Reception,
How are you all today? Did you manage to get out in the snow on Saturday and Sunday? I went on some lovely walks - I really do love snow. smiley I hope you managed to get out, explore and have some fun in the snow with your families. I have already seen some great pictures from Valentina, Luke and Caleb making snow angels and building snowmen! Maybe you've got some pictures that you'd like to post on the blog too. smiley

This morning we have a new story in Literacy - Little Red Riding Hood, Maths - Looking at the numbers 6, 7 and 8 and the rest of your usual morning activities. This afternoon it is Understanding the world. Try to complete as much as you can, but please don't worry about doing absolutely everything.

Remember also that we wouldn't expect children to sit and work all day in Reception. We would have about 15 minutes learning time on the carpet and a similar amount of time in a focus group/1:1 with an adult. When not with an adult, children access independent activities in the classroom where they learn through play.

I hope that you can get outside today and enjoy the snow with your family too. smiley

I look forward to seeing your photos and messages on the blog!

Home learning packs

There is a new home learning pack available this week that you can collect from school from Tuesday. Please let the school know if you are wanting to pick up a pack.

J2blast - This week's spellings

it, is, sit, pit, tip, pip, sip

I have added a new list of spellings on J2blast for you to access. Well done to the following children who have been going on J2blast and practising their spellings: Jordan, Arta, Luke, Nicholas, Unika, Constance, Nahom, Nathan, Ruby, Valentina, Shalom, Haris and Caleb!

A reminder of useful games/websites/apps - click on the picture to see more

Numbots - This is a great game online which focuses on basic skills in maths. You should have your log ins at home, but please email me on the address above if you need them again.
ActiveLearn - This website has lots of ebooks for you to read at home. This would be great to use as you don't have your school reading books at the moment! Obviously still continue to read any books that you have at home too.
J2blast - This is a spelling game that you can find on BGFL - there isn't a link to this, just find the app on BGFL. Each week I will post a new set of spellings for you to practise spelling. You can of course play the games as much as you want to and you may want to learn additional words!

Teach your monster how to read If you haven't already downloaded this app, it's a great one to help with phonics at home. Lots of games to play to help learn the phonic sounds.

The website/computer version is free!

Morning routine

We always start our morning by talking about the date and weather. We sing the days of the week song and we discuss the date - what day was it yesterday, what day is it today...tomorrow? If yesterday was the 24th, what is today? What is one more than 24... Perhaps you can talk about the date and weather at home. There is a youtube link of the days of the week song below.

Basic skills

1. Practise writing your name - If you can already do this, have a go at your surname or even your middle name if you have one.

2. Have a look at the 'I can see document' below. Take a look at Day 1.

I wonder if you can write something about this picture? I wonder if you can think of your own sentence or perhaps you could write another ‘I can see’ sentence. I can see... It is up to you! If this is a bit tricky, you could have a go at writing some sounds/words.

3. Word of the day - Take a look at the document of slides below. Take a look at Day 1 and complete the activity!

You might like to look out of your window at home and write an I can see sentence about that instead. Or just some sentences/words about the snow. I've added a word mat below to help you with tricky words.  smiley

Collective Worship

Please click on the document below to see this week's Collective Worship. Please look at Monday -

1.) Daily devotion. 2.) The Bible story. If you have a Bible at home, perhaps you can read it with an adult.

Literacy - Little Red Riding Hood

Today we are starting a new story. Over the next few weeks we are going to focus on a traditional story each week. This week's story is the Little Red Riding Hood. There will be a little activity each day linked to the story

I have added the story powerpoint below and all the other resources you will need in one document. Today I would like you to read the story and then have a go at sequencing the story using key pictures from the story. I wonder if you can retell the story using the key pictures? Think about the key language, e.g. “Oh Granny, what big eyes you have..."

Snack time and this week's Nursery rhyme...

There's a worm at the bottom of the garden (Wiggly Woo)

Maths - Which show 6? Composition of 6

This week we are learning about the numbers 6, 7 and 8!

Take a look at the lesson resources below.

1.) Link to lesson video - Growing 6, 7, 8! Week 1 - Session 1 - Which show 6? Composition of 6

2.) Powerpoint slides (in video).

3.) Lesson activity card.

Phonics - ur

We will practise our new sound 'ur' today.

In phonics, we do the following things:

1. Sing the alphabet song (the video below is slightly different to the one we sing at school, but the children know it).

2. Practise all of the sounds that we have learned so far.

3. Practise reading words with the previous sound in.

4. Watch a video of our new sound.

5. Practise writing the new sound (pre-cursive letter formation).

6a. Practise reading words with our new sound in. We segment the sounds and blend them together to say/read the word, e.g. the word -  cat - segment ---> c-a-t - blend ---> cat!

6b. Practise writing words with the new sound in.

1. Alphabet Phonics Song

2. Practise all sounds learned so far!

3. Practise reading these words

4. New sound - ow

5. Practise writing the new sound (pre-cursive letter formation) - ur

5. Practise writing the new sound (pre-cursive letter formation) - ur

6a/6b. Practise reading and writing words with our new sound in.

 Lunch time

Little Big Maths

Please take a look at this week's Little Big Maths powerpoint (resource below). These are basic skills to practise throughout the week.

Understanding the world

We're now looking at the topic of Growing and Changing. Take a look at the slides below and talk about them with an adult. There are 3 different focus tasks that you might like to do. If you do not have the resources available to do this, please do not worry. smiley

Focus task options...

1. Fill in the missing word - what does a plant need to grow.

2. Plant a seed and talk about what a plant needs to grow. You might have to do this inside at the moment, because of the snow. I know that some of you have already planted seeds at home, so you can talk about what your seed needs to grow.
3. Draw/paint/create a picture of a plant and talk about/label the picture with what a plant needs to grow.

Activities in the snow

Learning through play in the snow. Take a look at some of the ideas below. Enjoy! smiley
