Learning, Living, Loving Together in Christ

Life in Year 5

CHRISTMAS READING BUDDIES

We had the chance to share some Christmas stories with our Year 1 Reading Buddies! It is always so lovely to see Year 5 being so caring and compassionate with the younger children. Some of the stories were funny too so it was delightful to hear lots of shared giggles!

FOREST SCHOOL

This half term, Year 5 began their Forest school sessions where they have enjoyed lots of different activities! They have been brave on the slack line and helped their friends across for balance. They have been busy building shelters and they have been exploring different creative tasks too! Mrs Lay has also had plenty  of chances to get the fire going to toast marshmallows and make some hot chocolate.

DT- Bridges

Year 5 have been learning about different bridge designs and what makes each one strong. They have looked at truss bridges, arch bridges and beam bridges. They then had a go at building their own bridges out of card and testing how strong they were before moving to Tinkercad and having a go at designing their own bridge on the 3D CAD app. Keep a look out for our finished models coming soon!

Celebration of the Word - Advent

Year 5 had the privilege of leading the Celebration of the Word assembly to start Advent.

We taught the school about of Advent begins with the theme of Hope and how they might share this with their friends and family. It was wonderful to see Y5 standing proudly to share the lines that they had learnt off by heart in order to share this important message.

MUSIC - VIRTUAL PIANO

As part of their topic on The Blues. Year 5 learnt how to play a Blues scale and The 12 Bar Blues.

They used the virtual piano and their headphones on their tablets to practice for themselves before some of them then shared performances with the rest of the class!

BRITISH VALUES

Year 5 worked hard in groups to create posters all about British Values.

Their posters show that they have really understood the importance of these in our lives and why it is essential that everyone receives them. Well done, Year 5.

SCIENCE - DISSOLVING

Year 5 have been looking at different materials and how some might dissolve. They carried out an investigation to find out which materials dissolved and how easily they dissolved. They recorded their results and then used this to explain what they had learnt about solubility.

Music - The Blues

Year 5 have been learning all about The Blues as a style of Music! The learnt that it was started by black, African slaves and how it often helped them in times when they felt sad or needed motivation.

They learnt about 'bent notes' and how to sing them in the "Moanin' Lisa Blues". If you head to our Video Sharing Platform, you can see them performing it!

Our Heritage Day - Celebrating our families' roots!

YOUNG MINDS

Y5 joined the school in wearing yellow to mark World Mental Health day! It was lovely to see them all smile happily for their photo to show off their outfits! Mr Carroll spoke to the school in assembly about the fact that people often suffer with their mental health and how we can deal with this, but if you would like more information, you could visit www.youngminds.org.uk where there are lots of resources to help!

Style in Art

We have sent time looking at lots of different pieces of art from different styles. We have compared them, looked at what makes them so different and discussed what we like and dislike about them.

We have looked at:

  • Modernist Art
  • Rococo Art
  • Abstract Art
  • Contemporary Art

We looked at work from different artists and even looked at how Modernist and Rococo styles even influenced furniture!

Take a look at some of the work that they children produced for themselves below!

Making parachutes in Science

The children have been busy learning all about air resistance and how the shape of an object can effect the air resistance. Have a look at the photos below and ask your child all about what they found out from their investigation!

We are so lucky to have so many parents be able to join us for our first parent workshop of the year!

Thank you to those who were able to attend! If you weren't able to attend, we have attached the slides as a PDF below for you to read in your own time.

We hope that those who came got to learn all about the expectations of Y5 and how Mrs Hensman, Mrs Edgington and Miss Plant work together to support your children. We do have high expectations, but the children are already showing that they can live up to them! And with your support we hope that all the children will thrive and make lots of progress this year!

Using our Micro:bit devices

Once the children had written their code to create their micro:bit devices, they used them to collect data about the litter we found around school grounds. They collect information about which litter could be recycled and which couldn't.

MICRO:BITS

Year 5 really impressed Mrs Edgington with the coding skills! They worked well on putting together the "blocks" to write coded with told their micro:bits to show images, text, and then eventually worked to write code with variables where they created a device to count and collect data!

Faith and Culture Week

Year 5 learnt all about the Islamic faith. During our studies, we explored many aspects of the faith:

  • What the Islamic faith is and what Muslims believe
  • The many similarities with Islamic faith and Catholic faith
  • All about the Mosque - how they are designed and what we would find inside
  • We learnt about the Five Pillars of Islam and how Muslim people follow them
  • Special celebrations and how Muslim people come together as a community, just as we do as Catholics

The class thoroughly enjoyed this topic and asked many questions to deepen their understanding.

Well done, Year 5!
